The 90th Anniversary of the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute for Fundamental and Applied Parasitology of Animals and Plant - FSC VIEV 1932-2022

In 2022, the All-Russian Research Institute for Fundamental and Applied Parasitology of Animals and Plant - FSC VIEV celebrates its 90th Anniversary. The USSR People's Commissariat for Agriculture’s Order No. 3 established the All-Union Institute of Helminthology (VIG) on April 07, 1932. Thanks to this document, the first independent scientific institution in helminthology came into being which has been developing and deepening fundamental and applied issues of parasitology to this day.

The Institute Leaders were Academician of three Academies of Sciences K.I. Skryabin, Professor D.N. Antipin, Academician V.S. Ershov, Academician A.S. Bessonov, and Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences A.V. Uspensky. Currently, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Veterinary Sciences M.V. Arisov carries on the Institute Leaders’ traditions.

A pleiad of eminent scientists has worked at the Institute for 90 years, namely, Academician of three Academies of Sciences K.I. Skryabin, Academician V.S. Ershov, Professor A.M. Petrov, Professor R.S. Shults, Professor I.V. Orlov, Professor T.S. Skarbilovich, Professor E.E. Shumakovich, M.P. Gnedina, Professor V.I. Petrochenko, Professor N.V. Demidov, Professor V.G. Gagarin, Professor G.A. Kotelnikov and many others.

Many years of research by a team of Soviet helminthologists actually resulted in studied development cycles, and biology and ecology of pathogens of the most significant helminth infections in animals: helminths’ development terms were determined in different phases depending on environmental conditions; intermediate hosts were identified among mollusks, crustaceans, mites, ticks, insects and other animals; sources of animal helminth infection were identified in pastures, enclosures, barnyards, and complexes; and methods were developed based thereon for helminthological evaluation of pastures and other places where animals were kept, which made it possible to predict their potential infecting with helminths and took preventive measures in a timely manner.

A range of susceptible animals in the wild, and their possible introducing of helminths to farms were determined; circulation routes and conditions were studied for preservation of infectious invaders in nature; and seasonal dynamics of helminth infections was determined in different zones of the Country, which allows for planning and differentially taking preventive measures subject to natural and economic conditions of certain zones. Factors of species resistance and breed resistance in animals to helminth infection, as well as the role of keeping conditions and the animal husbandry technology were identified in protecting animals from helminth infections.

Complex processes of the host organism influencing the parasite (immunity), and pathogenic effects of helminths on the organism were studied in various forms of manifestation. A theory of allergic manifestations of helminth infections, and measures to prevent this severe process were developed.

This whole set of studies constitutes the biological basis for prevention of helminth infections.

The purpose of the Institute today is fundamental and priority-oriented applied scientific research, development efforts, introduction of scientific achievements and best practices aimed at new knowledge in parasitology. Topics of scientific research which the Institute is working on today are highly relevant.

While focusing on developing fundamental and applied research as part of State Assignments, the Institute actively performs expert activities working in close contact with Federal and Executive Authorities, Ministries and Departments, hunting farms and agricultural enterprises.

The Institute has always been active in training highly qualified scientific personnel. The Institute has a Dissertation Council (D 24.1.249.02). The Institute is the Founder of the one-of-a-kind Scientific Journal "Russian Journal of Parasitology". The Institute acts as an Organizer of the International Scientific Conference "Theory and practice of parasitic disease control".

The following special publication is dedicated to the Anniversary Date:
